Things people hit first

I installed the app and nothing is reaching Google

Check the app embed is switched on in your theme. The pixel sends its events to the embed, and the embed is what passes them to Google - with it off, everything looks fine in your browser and nothing arrives. The Pixel page in the app tells you, and links straight to the switch.

GA4 is empty, but the app says the pixel is firing

Almost always consent. Across the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, Consent Mode defaults to denied until a shopper accepts your cookie banner - and most people never accept their own. Accept it in the browser you are testing with, then look again. Test with your own consent choice rather than by turning consent off for shoppers.

The checkout events are not ticking in the app

They will not, and that is a Shopify restriction rather than a fault. Checkout pixels run in a sandbox that cannot call back to your own shop domain, which is where the app listens. The app therefore cannot report on checkout events either way. Check them yourself instead - see the next answer.

How do I check my checkout events myself?

Two steps, and do them in this order. First, turn OFF Google Tag Manager preview - see the next answer, because leaving it on stops checkout events reaching Google at all. Then turn on Debug mode in Settings, open your browser console and walk your checkout: every event is logged as it fires, with its full payload and the market it resolved to. That proves the event fired. To prove Google received it, open GA4 Realtime and look for begin_checkout, add_shipping_info, add_payment_info and purchase. Realtime is the right report here because it shows events whether or not they carry a debug flag. Turn Debug mode off before you go live.

My checkout events disappear when GTM preview is on

They do, and it is not your setup. Tag Manager's preview works by reaching into the page to attach its debugger. Shopify runs checkout pixels in a sandboxed frame that browsers will not let it reach, the attempt throws, and your container stops firing tags inside checkout - while the browser console carries on logging every event perfectly, because logging happens before anything is sent. So checkout looks healthy and Google receives nothing. Close the Tag Assistant window, open a fresh tab, and check GA4 Realtime instead. Preview is fine on your storefront; it is only checkout it breaks.

Do I have to paste the pixel again when I change a setting?

No. Settings reach the pixel at runtime. The app only asks you to paste a new version when the app itself is updated, and it will tell you when that happens.

Do I need Google Tag Manager?

No. Choose gtag in Settings and the app sends to GA4 directly - no container, no import. GTM is there if you already use it and want tag control.
